We collect information about others in order to market our services and obtain verification of identity. As Database Professionals it is our lifeblood. We labor daily to store, backup, transfer, transform, share, report, analyze and protect data. Ultimately, our primary concern is protection of the data’s integrity, availability and confidentiality. In order to effectively protect our sensitive data, it is critical that we understand the characteristics that define that data as being sensitive. In this chapter, we will explore the characteristics that make data sensitive, present specific examples of sensitive data and discuss some of the weapons available to the Database Administrators that are employed to protect it.

Hands-On Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Integration Services is a revised edition of its predecessor, which was based around SQL Server 2005 Integration Services. I have taken the opportunity to enhance the content wherever I felt could benefit readers more. The feedback I have received on the previous edition has been instrumental to these enhancements. Professional SQL Server 2008 Internals and Troubleshooting

WHILE PUTTING TOGETHER THE PROPOSAL that eventually became this book, the aim was to write a
troubleshooting guide that covered the additional tools available from the SQL Server community.
It soon became clear, however, that to effectively talk about the tools, so many digressions were
necessary to explain the results that the fl ow and impact were interrupted. The decision was made
to alter the approach to include architectural information, not just on SQL Server, but on the whole
platform on which SQL Server depends.
