While this book provides an ample tutorial of wireline data and wireless communications, we did not want to write yet another book on data communications or the basics of cellular wireless systems. Mobile VPN: Delivering Advanced Services in Next-Generation Wireless Systems covers only relevant topics and disciplines comprising Mobile VPN and other advanced wireless data service. Consequently, this book requires a reader to have basic education in computer science and electrical engineering. We also assume you have some exposure to the basics of data communications and cellular wireless concepts, as well as an understanding of OSI model and TCP/IP, and link layer technologies such as PPP, ATM, and Frame Relay.hotfile, fileserve

Reading this book does not require a previous understanding of IP tunneling, wireless data communications, Wireless LAN fundamentals (although knowledge of regular LAN technology is still required), VPN concepts, data networking security, or next-generation cellular systems and services taxonomies. Those readers with a good understanding of these and other related technologies will find in-depth discussions on these and other related subjects especially useful. Sometimes even familiar and well-studied and documented subjects are presented in a new light of application to wireless and mobile VPN.

Over the past four years, Apple has changed the way we think about mobile computing. The iOS Platform has changed the way that we, the public, think about our mobile computing devices. With full-featured applications and an interface architecture that demonstrates that small screens can be effective workspaces, the iPhone has become the smartphone of choice for users and developers alike.
Part of what makes the iPhone such a success is the combination of an amazing interface and an effective software distribution method. With Apple, the user experience is key. The iOS is designed to be controlled with your fingers rather by using a stylus or keypad. The applications are “natural” and fun to use, instead of looking and behaving like a clumsy port of a desktop app. Everything from interface to application performance and battery lifehas been considered. The same cannot be said for the competition. Through the App Store, Apple has created the ultimate digital distribution system for developers. Programmers of any age or affiliation can submit their applications to the App Store for just the cost of a modest yearly Developer Membership fee. Games, utilities, and full-feature applications have been built for everything from pre-K education to retirement living. No matter what the content, with a user base as large as the iPhone, an audience exists. In 2010, Apple introduced the iPad and iPhone 4 platforms—bringing larger, faster, and
higher-resolution capabilities to the iOS. Although these devices will only be a few months “old” by the time you read this, they will already be in the hands of millions of users, eagerly awaiting the next great app

In 2001, I set up a web site called .NET 247 (www.dotnet247.com/) that at the time achieved some success
in the community that had sprung up around Microsoft’s new software development toolset. The premise of the site was to help me as a developer migrate my knowledge from pre-.NET technologies (Win32, MFC, classic ASP, etc.) over to .NET. I found it frustrating that spinning up a thread or opening a file would be a few seconds’ work prior to .NET, but in .NET it took hours of research. With this book, I’ve looked to do a similar thing—answer the common questions and give you a leg up into understanding the platform so that you can get on and do the clever thing that only you’ve thought of. The idea of this book is not to go into masses of detail on every little thing; however, if you work through all of the different platforms in this book and its companion, you’ll know enough to be proficient on any platform that you turn your hand to.

Specifically, what I’ve tried to concentrate on is the following:
• Getting to a point where you can compile and run an application on the emulator or device
• Showing how to build a user interface—specifically move between forms, handle events,
get data on the screen, and capture input
• Showing how to connect to HTTP-based resources so that you can talk to services in the
cloud
• Showing how to store and cache data locally for performance and for offline support
• Showing how to build a simple, but real, application that works end to end

Popular acceptance of the smartphone has brought technology once only previously imagined in science fiction to today’s reality. You can now use the small electronic device that used to be a simple cell phone to manage your calendar, listen to music, take pictures, provide maps and navigation, and browse the Internet—and still make a phone call. The technology that links you to the vast information store on the Internet any time and anywhere is perhaps the greatest revolution in information access the world has seen. Not only available to the developed nations where we expect to see high-end smartphones, these devices are also widely available indeveloping nations, where they are often the primary device people use to access the Internet.

networking is only some of the technology that make the smartphone possible. The widespread use of open mobile computing platforms is the key to the smartphone’s success. These platforms have opened the door for third parties (that’s you!) to write software applications for these mobile computing platforms quickly and inexpensively.Applications are no longer the exclusive domain of the device manufacturer. Now, anyone
can imagine an application and implement it. These applications are with you everywhere that
you carry your cell phone, and can take advantage of positioning information and wireless
connectivity provided by the phone. It is this ability for anyone to create an application that has
made the cell phone the truly wonderful device of tomorrow. Beginning Nokia Apps Development_Using MeeGo, Mobile QT and OpenSymbian

Software development for the professional Mac developer has always had great support
from Apple. For new developers and those who are doing it for fun, the situation has
been less easy. For many years such developers had some difficult decisions to make if
they wanted to build their own Mac software.
Mac OS X offers some great high-level tools for improving productivity and automation,
such as Automator, Dashcode, and, of course, the venerable AppleScript. These are
very useful in adding features to existing applications and in automating repetitive tasks,
but you wouldn’t use them to create real applications.

The iPhone is a global device that uses the international standard GSM protocol. Unlocking the
phone so that it can use SI M cards anywhere is a major industry, and will probably continue to be
so even after Apple’s exclusive contracts with mobile carriers are gone.
The iPod touch is the heir apparent of the iPod, and once flash memory sizes surpass hard drives,
the iPod touch will be the iPod. But this iPod surfs the Web, gets email, and maps your location,
and new applications are constantly being developed for it. The impulse to get the iPod—already
the de facto standard MP3 player—to do even more is irresistible.
