adding iPads and iPhones to your managed network, you’ll likely want to keep them under closer control to avoid problems. Harmless as they may seem to management and users alike, the iPad and iPhone can threaten the security of your network and your valuable data, cause traffic problems, and increase your and your colleagues’ workload by requiring configuration and support. To get the most out of the iPad and iPhone, you’ll also need to connect them to your network in the right way. For example, to enable users to get e-mail from your Microsoft Exchange system on their iPads, you’ll need to set up the iPads to connect to
your mail servers. Just glomming onto the wireless network won’t cut the mustard.

Over the past four years, Apple has changed the way we think about mobile computing. The iOS Platform has changed the way that we, the public, think about our mobile computing devices. With full-featured applications and an interface architecture that demonstrates that small screens can be effective workspaces, the iPhone has become the smartphone of choice for users and developers alike.
Part of what makes the iPhone such a success is the combination of an amazing interface and an effective software distribution method. With Apple, the user experience is key. The iOS is designed to be controlled with your fingers rather by using a stylus or keypad. The applications are “natural” and fun to use, instead of looking and behaving like a clumsy port of a desktop app. Everything from interface to application performance and battery lifehas been considered. The same cannot be said for the competition. Through the App Store, Apple has created the ultimate digital distribution system for developers. Programmers of any age or affiliation can submit their applications to the App Store for just the cost of a modest yearly Developer Membership fee. Games, utilities, and full-feature applications have been built for everything from pre-K education to retirement living. No matter what the content, with a user base as large as the iPhone, an audience exists. In 2010, Apple introduced the iPad and iPhone 4 platforms—bringing larger, faster, and
higher-resolution capabilities to the iOS. Although these devices will only be a few months “old” by the time you read this, they will already be in the hands of millions of users, eagerly awaiting the next great app

In 2001, I set up a web site called .NET 247 (www.dotnet247.com/) that at the time achieved some success
in the community that had sprung up around Microsoft’s new software development toolset. The premise of the site was to help me as a developer migrate my knowledge from pre-.NET technologies (Win32, MFC, classic ASP, etc.) over to .NET. I found it frustrating that spinning up a thread or opening a file would be a few seconds’ work prior to .NET, but in .NET it took hours of research. With this book, I’ve looked to do a similar thing—answer the common questions and give you a leg up into understanding the platform so that you can get on and do the clever thing that only you’ve thought of. The idea of this book is not to go into masses of detail on every little thing; however, if you work through all of the different platforms in this book and its companion, you’ll know enough to be proficient on any platform that you turn your hand to.

Specifically, what I’ve tried to concentrate on is the following:
• Getting to a point where you can compile and run an application on the emulator or device
• Showing how to build a user interface—specifically move between forms, handle events,
get data on the screen, and capture input
• Showing how to connect to HTTP-based resources so that you can talk to services in the
cloud
• Showing how to store and cache data locally for performance and for offline support
• Showing how to build a simple, but real, application that works end to end

WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE IPHONE, Apple revolutionized the mobile computing market. The iPhone transformed the mobile phone from a device that you could use to make calls, check e – mail, and look up movie times into a computer that could run almost any type of application that you can think of. Since the iPhone ’ s release in 2007, developers have written over 200,000 applications for the device. These “ apps ” encompass many categories including games, utilities, social networking, reference, navigation, and business among many others.
The trend in the fi eld of computing is moving toward mobility and mobile platforms like the iPhone and away from a desktop – based environment. Particularly in business and corporate environments, decision makers want convenient access to their data at all times. The iPhone is an ideal platform for mobile computing because of its small form factor and extensive set of libraries and APIs, and its general popularity as a mobile phone.

While there are many terrifi c books on iPhone software development on the market, I couldn ’ t find one geared toward the enterprise developer that needs to mobilize corporate data or business applications. My original goal for this book was to present these developers with the information that they would need to be able to get enterprise data from a back offi ce server, display and manipulate that data on a mobile device, and then get the appropriate information back into their corporate information system.

But Apple’s insight into opening up the iPhone OS early on as a platform for an army of independent developers (just like you), who could quickly produce
thousands of apps, allowed consumers to customize and personalize their phones, transforming them into something more transcendent and utilitarian than just a phone with some hasty, ill-conceived, add-on applications. The iPhone became a personal computer you can carry in your pocket.

“It makes programming fun again!” is a cliché among geeks; all too often it’s used to extol the virtues of some newfangled programming language or platform. But I honestly think there’s no better aphorism to describe iPhone graphics programming. Whether you’re a professional or a hobbyist, I hope this book can play a small role in helping you rediscover the joy of programming.
This book is not an OpenGL manual, but it does teach many basic OpenGL concepts as a means to an end, namely, 3D graphics programming on the iPhone and iPod touch. Much of the book is written in a tutorial style, and I encourage you to download the sample code and play with it. Readers don’t need a graphics background, nor do they need any experience with the iPhone SDK. A sound understanding of C++ is required;
